New Leaders for New Schools

WISH LIST
$250: professional development class for future DC principal;
$1,000: resource library for future principal;
$10,000: recruitment of new principal for a low-performing school.

For too long now, DC schools have been failing their students. Dismal academic performance, unsafe environments, and uninspiring school cultures call into question the system’s very ability to educate. Research shows that successful urban schools have one thing in common: a great leader. So New Leaders for New Schools was formed with a specific goal in mind: to recruit a pool of high quality principals and teach them the skills they need to turn around low-performing schools. Outstanding leaders are identified from all walks of life and complete a year-long academic and residency program that focuses intensely on improving outcomes for all children. Thus far, 47 principals and assistant principals have been trained and are working in every ward in the city. In just half a year, a principal in one of the lowest performing schools in DC’s highest poverty area helped students improve 13% in math and 9% in reading. New Leaders will train up to 20 principals each year to ensure that every child excels academically. Isn’t it about time?
