Brush Art Gallery CONTACT:256 Market St. Lowell, MA 01852 978-459-7819 www.thebrush.orgEileen Byrne, Executive Director
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1982 by the Lowell Historic Preservation Commission as "A Brush With History," this is an arts institution that is truly rooted in its community, both physically and programmatically.
Housed in a restored mill building next to the National Historical Park's Visitor Center, "The Brush" is comprised of a spacious 2000 sq. ft. exhibition gallery, 14-15 active artists' studios open to the public for educational, sales, and public relations purposes, a classroom for teaching and training, and an administrative office.
The Gallery presents 5-6 shows annually which highlight outstanding national and international artists as well as focusing on Lowell’s strength, which is a melting pot of cultures. A major focus is on assisting underserved populations by celebrating Lowell’s diverse communities through art exhibitions, educational programs, community outreach and collaboration, a student docent program, and a scholarship program for youth.
Because so many Lowell youth cannot afford art school, Brush has developed a scholarship program for especially talented students on referral from agencies. What started as a two-week program is now a year-long program serving hundreds of students. It offers funds to local schools to bus students to the Brush, and provide them with an in-depth Gallery tour, art activity, and a sampling of ethnic food and music.
There are many students who could benefit from this scholarship program, and Brush is seeking funding for to add a weekly after-school program to it. You can help. (1997: CULTURE: Arts: Visual, Literary and Crafts)
