DESCRIPTION:Horizons for Homeless Children (established 1988) is the Commonwealth's only independent child-care organization serving homeless children. In over 100 family shelters across the state, more than 1,500 children each week enjoy HHC’s Playspace Program, staffed by over 850 volunteers and fully stocked with books, art supplies and climbing structures — enabling kids to be kids, yet also presenting physical and creative challenges. In addition, HHC runs three community children’s centers in the Boston area, providing care and preschool education for homeless children while enabling their parents to work toward self-sufficiency through on-site counseling, job training and parenting workshops. The organization has also developed a Training and Technical Assistance Program, helping early education teachers, social workers and human services providers to design and implement programs for homeless children in local communities, offering workshops, seminars and assistance in training. There are many vulnerable children who, in order to grow and develop, need Horizons for Homeless Children; to do that, it needs your help. (1997: HUMAN SERVICES: Children and Youth: General)
