DESCRIPTION:The Ludlow Mills built the Stevens Memorial Building for recreational enjoyment of employees and their families. In 1948 the Mills sold the building to the Town, with the stipulation that it continue to be used solely for recreation. The Town created a benefit corporation for the site: the Ludlow Community Center. In 1962 it decided to focus its mission on children, and affiliated with the national Boys & Girls Clubs. In 1970, responding to community need, it began providing child care services as well.
In 2002, having raised $6.5 million in a capital campaign, the Ludlow Boys & Girls Club opened a state-of-the-art, 42,000-sq.-ft. facility. It offers full-day preschool (6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.) 51 weeks a year to approximately 100 children in the Ludlow and Greater Springfield areas. The program is designed to provide a parents with a safe, healthy and educational environment for their children. Staff provide support for each individual child, and the program enables children to explore and learn at their own pace, socializing with others, while developing motor skills and problem solving abilities. They're helping to meet a growing demand for high-quality, affordable childcare in an area where needs are great. Won't you pitch in? (1997: HUMAN SERVICES: Children and Youth: General)
