DESCRIPTION:Did you know that one breeding female cat will generate over 80,000 kittens in just 10 years, and a female dog, 40,000 pups? No wonder there is a huge number of abandoned and "unowned" urban animals. Well-meaning residents feed them, and become emotionally engaged, but often cannot provide adequate care -- especially in lower-income urban neighborhoods. The result is considerable costs to taxpayers for animal control measures that never solve the problem.
The Alliance for Animals is an inner-city organization dedicated to: providing free and low-cost veterinarian services to disadvantaged (e.g., poor, disabled, elderly) pet owners, and stray or deserted animals; and to promoting non-lethal solutions to the huge problem of cat and dog overpopulation. The Alliance operates a no-kill shelter, and high volume, low-cost spay/neuter clinic; it serves 5,000 animals yearly.
Demand for the Alliance's services far exceeds current capacity. It costs only $59 per animal for sterilization, rabies vaccination, and testing for serious cat and dog diseases. If you are an animal-lover, your help is urgently needed. (1998: HUMAN SERVICES: Well-Being)
