DESCRIPTION:Formed in 1979, ARTSWorcester promotes collaborations among artists and cultural organizations in the Greater Worcester area. The agency's fiscal fortunes have varied, through economic surges and downturns, and after two very successful program years, in 1996 it was forced to relocate owing to the sale of its donated space.
That move prompted a review of the group's long-term goals. They have decided to assume a leadership and advocacy role in the area's cultural community, to cultivate relationships between the artistic community and municipal government, to create a community arts center, and to improve arts information and services.
They are working on an arts district in downtown Worcester, featuring valuable living and studio space for artists while providing cultural and economic development for the city.
ARTS-Worcester has established satellite galleries and collaborative exhibits, sponsored two political forums to discuss the arts, published and distributed thousands of copies of a Cultural Resource Book, and expanded an ART-files referral service. These folks are on a roll, and you can help them build the momentum. (1998: CULTURE: Arts: Community)
