DESCRIPTION:The Boston Living Center (BLC) is a peer-led self-help community resource center for people living with HIV/AIDS, dedicated to inspiring and empowering them to take charge of their health and lives. he BLC provides a variety of direct services -- including Boston's only daily congregate meals program for the HIV/AIDS Community. Members have access to any of the BLC's 50 programs and services, from employment support and nutritional consultations, to art classes and yoga, all offered free of charge.
Founded in 1988, the Center has grown from a small grassroots drop-in center to a well-recognized multi-service agency sought-after by both national and international organizations hoping to duplicate its unique model. The BLC has a long history of collaboration with other local agencies to increase access to services while reducing duplication and expenses. Additionally, the Center's staff of 22 is supported by a dedicated corps of volunteers, who last year provided the equivalent of 12 full-time staff.
Despite the much-heralded success of medication regimens that combat the effects of HIV and AIDS, a cure still remains elusive, and on average one new person joins the BLC each day. The Center has seen consistent growth of 10-15% annually in numbers of those utilizing services. The Center served more than 2,200 members in fiscal year 2004. The challenge before us is increasing growth among those infected. Your support can help the BLC meet this demand. (1998: HUMAN SERVICES: Health and Aging: General)
