DESCRIPTION:The fact that we are a nation of immigrants has informed our fundamental institutions and values--everything from the "American dream" to our free enterprise economy and our democratic political system. Massachusetts has always been a gateway, and today we are in a period of high entry. Today's immigrants come from a broader range of countries, are better educated, and generally improve their economic standing faster, than in earlier periods. But they still need help adjusting and preparing for citizenship.
MIRA is a statewide coalition of 100 human service organizations, serving the interests of more than 580,000 immigrants and refugees living in the Commonwealth today.
The Coalition provides information, training and leadership development for the many small community-based immigrant groups. When immigrants don't know where to turn for help, MIRA offers information and referral to appropriate resources. It has strong ties to every newcomer group here.
Donations are needed to keep up with demand. If you have a special interest in our newest citizens, or political refugees statewide, help MIRA. (1998: HUMAN SERVICES: Well-Being)
