DESCRIPTION:The original Boston Academy of Music was established in 1832, and for 15 years it produced important premieres, instituted school music, and refined the American choral tradition. It disbanded in 1847, but was reconstituted in 1980 as a volunteer professional and vocal repertory company, dedicated to presenting—rarely-heard works of some of the world's finest composers. The company has presented world, American, and Boston premieres of works by Bellini, Donizetti, Gershwin, Haydn, Liszt, Puccini, Straus, Rossini, Sullivan, Verdi and Wagner.
In 1996, after 15 seasons, the Academy appointed its first paid staff-member, and since then the company's ticket sales have quadrupled, it has been included on the Boston Globe's "Best of Boston" list, and the Globe has praised the Academy as "the city's leading concert opera company."
The Academy is working to foster a love of opera in children and young adults, through its family opera series each year. This is an excellent company, needing your support. (1998: CULTURE: Arts: Performing: Music and Dance)
