SATELLIFE: Communicating To Save Lives CONTACT:30 California Street Watertown, MA 02472 617.926.9400 www.healthnet.orgHolly D. Ladd, Executive Director
DESCRIPTION:SATELLIFE, founded in 1989, has designed and developed information services to meet the needs of health care workers, governments, medical schools, and health researchers in the developing world. They reach 100,000 individuals and institutions worldwide with free medical journals and professionally moderated discussion groups on such issues as HIV/AIDS treatment, nutrition, new epidemics, and cardiac health. Over two million email communications are distributed through these health forums each month. SATELLIFE offers electronic publications on critical health issues and GetWeb, enabling e-mail users to extract texts at no charge from the internet. Working with African governments, the Red Cross, and others, SATELLIFE's most recent projects using hand-held computers have already started to transform health research, disease identification, and healthcare training in East Africa and beyond. Working with the government in Uganda, they created a Uganda Health Information Network, including an email newsletter HealthNetNews that disseminates information from medical journals. By opening this information to thousands of doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, millions of people can now receive better medical treatments. Mozambique is next, and others are sure to follow. SATELLIFE needs funds to expand its reach throughout the developing world. Please help them build a pioneering and potent global health network.
