Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence

In Asian culture domestic violence is not a crime; there is not even a word for it in Asian languages, and many Asian immigrants do not know it is against the law here. So although Asians comprise just 3% of Massachusetts' population, in 1995-1997 10-18% of the women killed in domestic violence were Asian. The Asian Task Force Against Domestic Violence (ATFADV) is the only organization in New England focused on providing emergency shelter and advocacy services for battered Asian women, and working with Asian communities and leaders to end toleration of domestic violence. Since the subject is viewed in Asian homes as a family matter, asking for help outside the family, and divorce, are thought to bring shame and social ostracism upon a family. Since opening its shelter in 1994, the Task Force's caseload has grown steadily; in 1998 it helped 205 families and provided emergency shelter for 30 battered women and their 39 children. ATFADV has reached out to two underserved communities: South Asians (Indians, Pakistanis , Bangladeshis and others) and Koreans. A fifth room was added to its shelter to keep pace with demand for services. Growth like this indicates effective and efficient programs. The Asian community deserves everyone's support for its courage in addressing this difficult problem.
