Building Materials Resource Center
Here is a great idea and example of how philanthropy can multiply productivity and benefits. The Building Materials Resource Center was founded in 1994 to redirect good quality surplus building materials from landfill dumping to refurbishing Boston's poorest neighborhoods in Roxbury, Dorchester, Mattapan and Jamaica Plain. Construction company or individual homeowner donors receive tax deductions for their charitable contributions, while reducing their disposal costs; BMRC distributes the materials at deep discount to low- and moderate-income homeowners and the charities that serve them. It also helps its customers gain the skills and support to improve their homes themselves. In 1998, BMRC diverted from landfills over $1 million in perfectly usable building materials, and distributed them to 544 inner city homeowners and 28 charities. Income from sales supports half of the Center's budget. In 2003, it achieved 70% self-sufficiency and served 915 inner-city homeowners and 51 non-profit organizations. For its idea and excellent work BMRC received a prestigious Environmental Merit Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Here is your chance to work with a winner.
