DESCRIPTION:Surveys show that Americans consider a clean and safe environment to be one of their highest priorities, but they have not translated this notion into charitable giving. Nationwide, environmental causes receive only about 3¢ out of every charitable dollar. To address this problem, in 1988 Earth Share was formed by a coalition of leading environmental organizations; in New England, Earth Share has 76 conservation and environmental groups (24 are in Massachusetts) with programs that protect our health, land, water, air, human life, and wildlife. Members teach the public that protecting natural resources and public health requires real work, which costs real money, and that consequently one of the shortest routes to a safe, clean and wondrous environment is through charitable giving. Earth Share partners with corporations on workplace giving programs, maintains a website featuring its member groups, and generally leverages its own funds to expand environmental philanthropy many times over. Here is a highly cost-effective, sophisticated, investment for environmental quality and safety. (1999: NATURE: Environmental Education)
