Elizabeth Stone House
This is the only program of its kind in the country — offering an affordable, residential, mental health program for women with their children. Founded in 1974 to break cycles of homelessness, violence, disempowerment and institutionalization of women in emotional distress, the Elizabeth Stone House (ESH) has served more than 3,000 women and children from all over the country, teaching life skills to help women help themselves and their children, by making lasting life-changes. As survivors of violence, often with other issues of addiction and psychological stress, these women work on goal-setting, problem-solving, and career skills, while building self-esteem and trying to understand the underlying causes of their distress.
ESH's women and children are served by the Therapeutic Community, a five-month program for survivors of sexual abuse; protected and helped by the Battered Women's Program, which provides two months of emergency shelter; and sheltered under Transitional Housing, a program which has received national and international awards for excellence, and is the first program of its kind in the nation.
