Oak Hill Community Development
Oak Hill CDC was founded in 1985 to empower and assist community members in their efforts to revitalize the Union Hill, Oak Hill, and Upsala Street neighborhoods of Worcester. It is a vehicle through which people work together to reduce blight, stimulate investment, facilitate empowerment and self-sufficiency, improve living conditions, promote a healthy neighborhood and foster community pride in Worcester. Changes in technology, the economy, and the welfare system are marginalizing low- and moderate-income residents in urban neighborhoods. Oak Hill CDC opened a Community Resource Center in 1996 to provide resources (materials, workshops, computers and instruction) and opportinities to build skills promoting self-sufficiency and movement out of poverty. In only 3 years it recovered $15,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits and prepared 45 families to buy homes, 10 of whom have already done so. Workshop presenters are donated by local institutions—a model that benefits everyone. This is an excellent example of a grassroots boot-strap operation that is totally realistic and practical as well as compassionate. They, and those they serve, need your help.
