Political Asylum/Immigration Representation Project
Founded in 1989, PAIR's network of over 340 volunteer attorneys represents more than 580 low-income asylum-seeking clients who have fled repression in countries around the world. Examples of PAIR clients who have won asylum include a Mauritanian woman enslaved and persecuted for her activities opposing slavery, and a Tibetan teacher who suffered for her support of Tibetan independence. PAIR's basic task is to harness the energy, talent and resources of private attorneys and other volunteers to assist its clients; it also counsels and advises several hundred people each year who are detained by immigration; and trains, advises and supervises up to 15 law students a year, many from Boston College law school. Each year, volunteers provide over $3 million in pro-bono services, more donated legal services on asylum cases than any other immigration organization in the state, and this with minimal staffing: an executive director, a staff attorney, a detention attorney, an asylum attorney and a legal assistant. Human rights are fundamental to quality of life; PAIR stands squarely in the grand tradition of American philanthropy's commitment to political freedom. Won't you join them?
