Project Hope
Project Hope focuses on moving families out of poverty in Dorchester and Roxbury, through some of the most creative workforce development programs in the state, designed to empower homeless and low-income families to advocate for themselves and to take control of their futures. Its family shelter provides transitional housing and support services to 8 single mothers with children. In addition to the shelter, Project Hope operates a child care center, a neighborhood food pantry, adult learning and a community organizing program. Together these comprise a mutually-reinforcing set of support facilities, offering comprehensive assistance to the very needy. Over 600 families are supported each year by Project Hope's programs. The organization believes that philanthropy begins at an early age and at the grassroots level, so it makes an effort to involve young people—including the children of some of its major financial supporters—in the experience of serving others. It begins by showing them first that poverty does exist, and that even young people can make a difference in others' lives. This may be a way to teach your children philanthropy.
