Holly Metcalf knows rowing; as a six-time national/Olympic team member, she won 1 Bronze, 3 Silver, and the 1984 Olympic Gold Medals, and in 1990 she coached the national women's team to a Silver Medal in the world championships. In 1994 she founded "Row As One", a rowing camp for "masters" women (ages 27 and up) teaching self-development through "the unity of mental and physical power". As often happens with good ideas in philanthropy, one thing has led to another; so in 1997 she helped create, with collaborating inner-city charities, "G[irls]-ROW BOSTON," teaching the values of rowing to adolescent girls from high-risk neighborhoods, to develop strength, discipline, confidence, self-esteem , and mutual support. The program also provides mentors and encourages journal writing as a way for students to relate their new knowledge and experiences to life outside of school and rowing. G-ROW BOSTON has gained national attention (Sports Illustrated for Girls , and a 1999 Leading Women Award for Holly by the Girl Scouts of America) and is being studied for its broader ramifications by Harvard's School of Education. Most recently, Row As One has added a wellness and rehabilitation program called WeCanRow for cancer survivors; it uses rowing techniques to build upper body strength, improve self-image, and reestablish trust in one's body. It has teamed with Dana-Farber in a study on the effects of rowing exercise on women who have been treated for breast cancer.
