Women's Center
We'd like you to meet the nation's oldest operating Women's Center. Founded in 1971 as a place where women could convene to address issues and societal problems affecting them, the Center helped develop the first program for battered women (Transition House), one of the first rape crisis centers (Boston Area Rape Crisis Center), and the first self-help group for incest survivors (Incest Resources). If you are a woman in trouble needing help, and you don' t know where to turn, call this Center. They maintain a comprehensive network of employment, legal, medical, child care, mental health, and housing resources. They also provide direct service, free of charge -- including 80 support groups and workshops annually, a crisis counseling hot-line, a wealth of referral information, assistance with housing and employment, one-on-one psychotherapy with licensed counselors for low-income women, and a lending library. The Center is comfortable, home-like and wheelchair-accessible. The majority of clients are from Greater Boston and the North and South Shores, but some are from Central and Western Massachusetts. With a network of 100 volunteers serving 600 women every week, the Center's budget is under $156,000. That's cost-effective, so your donation will be well spent.
