DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1978 on the recommendation of a Cambridge City Council subcommittee, CMAC, located in the Bulfinch Square Complex in East Cambridge, is a community arts center with a particular mission: to present visual and performing arts programs to foster an ongoing dialogue about diversity. With programs like “Joyful Noise,” an annual gospel concert, and “El Dia de los Muertos,” an annual Latino rememberance celebration, it’s easy to see why CMAC is achieving on its mission; of the more than 16,000 people who attended its events in 2005, 40% were minorities from the Greater Boston area, while 61% of its 479 exhibiting and performing artists were minorities. CMAC also provides affordable performance space for dancers and touring companies, while its Art To Go initiative places artwork by local CMAC artists in corporate settings. Its 14 annual gallery exhibitions, which change about every six weeks, are free and open to the public during weekday business hours and events. Twice per year, CMAC provides an events calendar, including exhibitions and performing arts programs, to a mailing list of 45,000; it also emails its E-Club newsletter each month to 2,000 subscribers. This is a highly-productive, culturally diverse arts center, and it deserves your support. (2000: CULTURE: Arts: Community)
