DESCRIPTION:Lawrence has traditionally been, and will continue to be, a “Gateway City” for immigrants to the United States seeking economic opportunity. Research indicates that the best predictors of immigrants’ economic success are education and the ability to speak English.
For nearly a century and a half, since 1859, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur have served the people of Lawrence, MA. In 1996, the Sisters created the Notre Dame Education Center (NDEC) as an adult literacy center, with an Adult Diploma Program — an alternative to the GED, to help older adults acquire the equivalent of high school diplomas.
Most new jobs in Massachusetts today require training and education beyond high school. NDEC provides an outstanding opportunity for those who might otherwise be left behind, to get a leg up into the future of the Massachusetts economy. It costs $1,000 to put one student through the Adult Diploma Program. NDEC invites Catalogue readers to help with donations for scholarships to this Adult Diploma Program.
