DESCRIPTION:The institution of MCAS test results as a requirement for high school graduation has presented a major challenge to the Boston public school system: 66% of Boston's 10th-grade students failed MCAS; in some schools, the rate is 73-97%; for over 35% of Boston's students, English is a second language. Since 1966, Boston Partners in Education has been the city's leading school volunteer program; in nearly 40 years, BPE has mobilized tens of thousands of tutors and mentors to provide academic assistance directly to students. Among its activities: a school volunteer program, working in groups or one-on-one with K-12 children; Aim High, in which mentors create individualized study plans for struggling 10th-12th graders; Big Cheese Reads, matching corporate executives with 6th-8th grade students; and Math and Literacy Project, specifically designed to offer 4th and 5th graders with extra support in their match classes. For venture philanthropists wishing to make a difference in urban or just Boston public education, here is the opportunity of a lifetime -- for you and the kids! Your serve.
