DESCRIPTION:For many generations, small-boat fishermen have been the backbone of Cape Cod's maritime communities and traditions; hook fishing has been sustained for centuries. Factory trawling, in only a few years, has over-fished 36 species and damaged fragile bottom habitats for many others. This invoked government intervention for resource protection, but the innocent hook fishermen and concerned residents have been excluded from helping to manage the fisheries on which their lives have depended.
CCCHFA was founded in 1993 to empower hook fishing communities and to ensure that New England fisheries will be sustainable for the future. CCCFHA has 2,500 members, a website, a bi-monthly newsletter (Hooked on Cod); and a Community Fisheries Action Center to keep everyone informed and to facilitate collaboration among environmental, fishing, and community organizations. CCCHFA has also developed a long-term Fisheries Reform Plan. These initiatives are revitalizing the marine community on Cape Cod, but outside support is needed. This is a cause in which all Massachusetts residents -- you included -- are stakeholders. Please help. (2001: HUMAN SERVICES: Well-Being)
