DESCRIPTION:Here again is a "Massachusetts original" the first of its kind in the nation, evoked by the new John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse.
The motivating idea is that for a democracy's legal and justice system to be understood and appreciated by its citizens, requires public education programs of its own, rather than leaving the teaching to television, crime novels, and direct experience. So where does the system turn for impartial provision of this service? Where else but philanthropy?
Founded in 1998, the James D. St. Clair Court Public Education Project has developed a variety of programs, including elementary school classroom instruction, mock trials for middle schools, legal apprenticeships, educational theater, and public lectures. Already the project has served more than 7,000 children and adults, and gained national media attention. Much of its success is owed to partnerships with the judiciary, law firms, educational institutions, and leading citizens. Over 240 volunteer judges, lawyers, and other legal professionals have brought energy, expertise, and commitment to the project through their work with young, mostly inner-city children.
Your support will enable this innovative national model to expand and replicate its programs statewide in other courthouses and classrooms. (2001: CULTURE: Education: Informal: General)
