East End House CONTACT:105 Spring Street Cambridge, MA 02141 (617) 876-4444 www.eastendhouse.orgMichael Delia, President and CEO
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1875 as one of Greater Boston's earliest settlement houses, East End House evolved into a highly adaptable and versatile social service and community center, focusing on helping people providing affordable child and school-age care, senior activities, community education and outreach, computer training, emergency food assistance, and other community-building services to low-income families and individuals. Think of all the good that has been done, year after year, without fanfare, by all the volunteers attracted to help others, by this modest institution!
Okay, so it's venerable but is it sclerotic? Don't think so.... In 1993 it completed a new physical facility. In 1997-8 it "re-invented" itself with a new strategic plan. In 2000, 2,500 volunteer hours were logged; its food program reached nearly 1,000 households; 60 children were on its waiting list for preschool childcare and after-school programs; its seniors club had 50 members; and it opened a computer lab. It has also created a "Discovery Garden" in its backyard, a computer lab, and new programs for teens.
"Our goal is to be the best example of a community center anywhere...." These folks can really use your help. (2001: HUMAN SERVICES: Well-Being)
