DESCRIPTION:Ellis Memorial & Eldredge House (EMEH) has served needy families in Boston's South End since 1885. They have seen many changes in the South End, in family life and values, and even in philanthropy. It is not easy for venerable Boston charities to maintain their currency with the times. Today, under fresh leadership and a new strategic plan, Ellis provides: day-care for 175 children from infancy to school age; a state-of-the-art computer center for families; family crisis counseling; a program to help elders and disabled adults maintain their independence; a summer day camp for 100 school-age children; and an intergenerational program.
They carry out a "Life-Long Learning Empowers Teens" (LET) program in the Tent City Development and surrounding communities. Recognizing the difficulty of holding teenagers' attention in after-school programs, LET gives them a voice in activity planning, to address their issues and needs: caring relationships, safe places, a variety of activities, marketable skills, health, and opportunities for civic participation. Now, on this strong basis, what EMEH needs most is new donors. Won't you help? (2001: CULTURE: Education: Informal: General)
