DESCRIPTION:If you stopped by the Lawrence public boathouse on the Merrimack River on a summer day, you'd see hundreds of folks out boating, thanks to the Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program (GLCB). GLCB provides safe, affordable and fun boating for people from all backgrounds and neighborhoods, and it is growing every year--in 2000 more than 700 people used its facilities every day.
GLCB is especially successful with children and youths, serving nearly 3,500 annually, for free, since 1983. These youngsters enjoy both formal lessons and safe, structured recreation time with caring instructors.
Normally self-supporting, this scale of success requires periodic additional funding--to repair wear and tear on boats and equipment, and to increase staff to keep up with the growing number of participants. (2001: HUMAN SERVICES: Well-Being)
