DESCRIPTION:The Haverhill Historical Society is a more than century-old organization that is still vital in its community, one of the most active historical societies in the Commonwealth, and one that other institutions go to for advice.
Within the last decade it has upgraded its three historic buildings, improved the care of its collections, and expanded its education and outreach programs. It now hosts hundreds of schoolchildren annually, in Scout programs, overnights and birthday parties as well as routine visitations and a seven-week summer camp to introduce children to history in fun and imaginative ways. It has also reached out to non-traditional constituencies such as developmentally delayed adults and senior citizens, with on- and off-site programs.
With an eye toward further improvements, HHS has revised its strategic plan to focus on five key objectives: to refine and expand curriculum-based school programs; to make the site physically more inviting to the public; to upgrade storage areas for its collections; to create changing exhibits and programs; and to strengthen its financial base.
