DESCRIPTION:The Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1913 by talented amateur musicians wishing to offer free concerts in Plymouth. It was not incorporated as a charity until 1973, and has evolved into a fully professional ensemble, serving over 100 communities in southeastern Massachusetts and the Cape with technical and educational excellence. Its average audience is 1,100, but the largest was an outdoor concert on July 4, 2000 for 20,000, and a simulcast radio audience estimated at 280,000. Its first CD, The Orchestra of America's Hometown, featured American compositions by Copland, Barber, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Ives. This is a first-class suburban and rural community orchestra. The PPO's venerable 1,500-seat Memorial Hall was recently renovated for air conditioning at summer concerts, among other amenities. And the program has expanded to 12 concerts per year, year-round. Will you help this fine institution to support its growth? (2001: CULTURE: Arts: Performing: Music and Dance)
