DESCRIPTION:The SpeakEasy Stage Company (est. 1992) is best known for staging Boston—premier productions that consistently earn awards from Eliot Norton/Boston Theatre, and the Independent Reviewers of New England. It is one of four companies selected for residence at the Boston Center for the Arts.
Presenting thought-provoking new plays and musicals by both nationally-known and emerging playwrights, SpeakEasy offers a high- quality, affordable alternative to Boston's larger theaters. Every year the company's "MainStage" program presents 5 major productions and just this year moved to the Roberts Studio Theatre, a larger performance space. SpeakEasy's "In-Concert" program explores 20th century American musical theater in a concert setting. SpeakEasy has attracted a dedicated base of subscribers and audiences, but at this stage of its growth, its need for continuous marketing is a drag on its artistic budget. To give SpeakEasy a boost, Fleet/Bank of America in 2004 awarded it a $10,000 grant, which will be used to increase its subscription base. (2001: CULTURE: Arts: Performing: Theatre and Film)
