Adaptive Environments
Humans are more diverse than ever before; we live longer, with more
abilities and disabilities, and higher expectations of choice in our
lifestyles. Worldwide, people survive illness and injury at rates
unimaginable only a generation ago; formerly fatal diseases and
injuries are now chronic conditions we learn to live with for decades,
often assisted by new technology or medicines. "Universal design"
(sometimes called "design for all") creates products, environments,
and information that will be usable by everyone to the greatest extent
possible. It is not a style, but a framework f or problem-solving
anticipating the broadest variety of potential users and conditions.
Often, solutions that work better for people with disabilities -- e.g.,
curb cuts, electric doors, etc. -- work better for everyone.
AE was founded in Boston in 1978, to promote universal design through
educational programs, technical assistance, training, consultation,
publications, and advocacy. It has sponsored two world conferences of
specialists and amateurs in 1998 and 2000, and a third will occur in December 2004 with over 200 presentations by presenters from 32 nations. An important partner has been the United Nations
Voluntary Fund on Disabilities. Operating at the intersection of
ethics, public health, public policy, and design, this extraordinary
group invites us to think about our world in new ways as it works to
"make the world fit for all people." Supporting this organization will
be a fascinating adventure.
