DESCRIPTION:How do small philanthropic arts groups focus on what they do best--designing
and developing programs for their audiences while still
managing their budgets and navigating the difficult waters of
business, finance, and marketing? For some, the solution is the Arts
and Business Council (ABC) of Greater Boston -- another partnership
between the sectors.
Launched some 25 years ago in New York City as Business Volunteers for the Arts, the Council now has 17 affiliates in the U.S. Re-launched with a new name in 2000, ABC forges relationships that
provide business expertise to arts organizations that need it: pro
bono management consulting services, a board development program,
workshops in marketing, and technology expertise. The Business On Board (BOB) program is a comprehensive training and placement program for business professionals interested in Board service, the only training of its kind in the region. Volunteerism is the
core of its mission, supplemented by various other formal and informal
relationships. ABC is probably working with small- to medium-sized
arts organizations near you -- won't you help them extend their reach? (2002: PROMOTING PHILANTHROPY: Charities Helping Charities)
