Charlestown Lacrosse and Learning Center CONTACT:PO Box 290537 Charlestown, MA 02129 617-242-1813 charlestownlacrosse.comBob Cutler, Executive Director
DESCRIPTION:In 1997 two Charlestown fathers, Stan and Zack, created this
integrated athletics and education program for their sons and other
neighborhood boys. Their ideas could have been taken from classical Greek texts: that athletics, education, and community service together
develop mind, body, and character, in youth. They began with 29 boys
in the first year, and evidently had great success, because the next
year 150 boys and girls showed up to participate in the program! With
that captive audience, they added a Learning Center to provide team
members with academic assistance and educational volunteer
opportunities. Regular attendance at school was a prerequisite for
team membership in the following year. Apparently that worked as well,
because today CLLC has four programs and seven competitive teams for
inner-city kids ages 6 to 18. To extend their horizons, players attend
games and experience student life at local schools and universities.
For some the Center has helped gain admissions and scholarships at
prestigious New England schools. Here is a winning program, and you
can be part of their success! (2002: HUMAN SERVICES: Children and Youth: Sports and Summer)
