City Stage Co. CONTACT:539 Tremont St. Boston, MA 02116 617-542-2291 www.citystage.orgSusan Gassett, Founder, Artistic Director
DESCRIPTION:City Stage Co. was founded in 1974 in response to the racial tension that divided
Boston during court-ordered desegregation. The idea was to provide a neutral
gathering place for diverse groups who would share their stories and develop
connections through performance. Today, City Stage still reaches out to
urban children and their families, producing original works that explore racism,
communication, violence prevention, immigration, health, and other issues through
participatory performances. Audience members join actors on stage and theater
becomes a dynamic, interactive, social event that engages everyone.
Performances in local libraries and schools, at social service agencies and
community centers, are free. Through after school programs CS also offers classes
in acting, dance, music, art, and creative writing, and collaborates with museums,
libraries, schools, and community centers to produce free touring programs that
reach thousands more. Recipient of a MUSE Award for an interactive video about
children and racism, and a YouthReach Initiative grant from the Massachusetts
Cultural Council, CS is a small company with both a local and national reach. Your
support brings live, participatory theater to children and families here in Boston
and across the US. (2002: CULTURE: Arts: Performing: Theatre and Film)
