Association for Gravestone Studies

Gravestones are America's earliest sculpture. As epigraphy and iconography, they offer a unique record of intellectual history, in which each artifact is dated and associated with certain individuals known to have lived. Most are still found in their original settings, surrounded by similar objects from the same period. Founded in 1977, AGS today has 1,200 dedicated members, both professional and amateur, who have provided strong and competent leadership in preserving these antiques which grace so many of our New England towns. They have identified and studied the causes of historic gravestone deterioration and destruction, and have developed conservation strategies that benefit many of us who have at one time or another enjoyed and appreciated the presence of these silent witnesses to enduring values in our country. Here is your opportunity to express your thanks.
