Lowell Association for the Blind
Trips to the zoo, the movies, the mall, and the beach may be
ordinary events for some -- but not for the blind and visually
impaired. For over 75 years, the Lowell Association for the
Blind has been the only agency north of Boston to provide
these and other programs to the blind and visually impaired
of the Greater Merrimack Valley. Founded in 1923, LAB
provides a variety of services for youth, senior youth, and
adults which include recreational, educational, and social
activities. Programs like Beep Baseball, instruction in
country western dancing and self-defense, and events like
"Birding by Ear" (in conjunction with the Massachusetts
Audubon Society) bring to the blind and visually impaired
opportunities not often available to them. Radio readings of
the daily papers, low vision and adaptive software like ZOOM
text, JAWS and Duxbury and printing with a Braille embosser,
talking watches and calculators -- along with the training to
use them-all these make life easier, fuller and more
enjoyable. LAB is always on the lookout for new programs to
challenge clients of all ages. Bring your ideas, and your
support, to LAB.
