DESCRIPTION:Victory Programs provides services to some 2,000 people a year, designing
and implementing creative models of care for adults and families whose
recovery from alcoholism and addiction is complicated by poverty,
homelessness, chronic disease and disability. Innovators in the field of
recovery treatment for multiply diagnosed persons (Victory Programs has been around since 1975, as has its Director), the agency promotes the reintegration of
individuals into communities, and the rebuilding of families. VP's newest
program, the Portis Family House, is a residential shelter for homeless or
low-income minority women. Many have been victims of domestic violence,
most are single parents, and all are recovering from substance abuse and
living with chronic illness. The idea is to stay sober, manage their HIV,
reunite with their children, find employment, and function as a family in a
supervised setting that offers stability and support. This is the goal for
up to six care-taking parents and 10-15 children a year, and Victory
Programs would like to add a second house to its first. But recent
changes in the funding environment threaten these plans. Won't you step in
to support the rebuilding of our most vulnerable families? (2002: HUMAN SERVICES: Well-Being)
