DESCRIPTION:CSO is the only full-size symphonic orchestra on Cape Cod and the Islands, and the third largest in
Massachusetts. Founded in 1962, this high-quality symphonic orchestra plays to over 40,000 listeners every
year. The CSO covers half its costs through ticket sales; its 85 professional musicians work only part-time, and
so must supplement their income otherwise. Music education school programs on the Cape have been heavily
hit by state budget cuts and reduced state aid, yet the CSO provides free concerts to schools and students -- in 2002, 4,500 children. They have launched a Youth Ensembles Program wherein promising musicians are
enabled to refine their techniques with orchestra members, with a plan of creating soon a Cape & Islands
Youth Orchestra. In its “Composing Kids” Program, 6th-graders spend 22 weeks composing a symphony
under expert instruction, then the CSO performs it -- to a highly appreciative audience, you can bet! CSO also
offers competitive music scholarships for promising students; one winner, Elizabeth Remy, is now principal
harpist with the Atlanta Symphony. Here you have philanthropy truly enhancing quality of life on the Cape
& Islands; if you have a home there, or are a visitor, please show your appreciation. (2003: CULTURE: Arts: Performing: Music and Dance)
