Chernobyl Children's Project USA CONTACT:75 McNeil Way, Suite 305 Dedham, MA 02026 781-251-0137 www.ccpusa.orgPatricia Doyle, Executive Director
DESCRIPTION:In 1986 the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded, spreading over 190 tons of highly
radioactive materials over a region populated by more than 2 million people, about
one-third of them children. In 1997 the Chernobyl Children Project USA was
established to serve children in the Chernobyl region. Each year this charity brings
130 children to the Boston area for the month of July, to stay in pairs with 65 host
families in the region. Each child receives much needed medical evaluation and
treatment, sound nutrition, respite and connects with an American family.
CCP has touched the lives of over 1000 children from Belarus, Ukraine and western
Russia and is a coordinated effort by nearly 400 volunteers. In 2002, 122 children
received medical evaluations, 38 required further hospital follow up; nearly a half a
million dollars in medical services were donated. Ultimately, the children from
Chernobyl return with a confidence and renewed spirit of hope; for the US families
that host these children they are able to connect to individuals and community in
dire need, make a positive impact, and realize a more balanced view of the word
including economic, social and environmental disparities. CCP wants to serve a
greater number of children and thus reduce the number turned away each year. Your
contribution will make it all possible. (2003: INTERNATIONAL)
