Dress for Success Boston
Dress for Success is a philanthropic phenomenon -- launched in 1996, it has now been replicated in 75
U.S. cities and three abroad. The Boston affiliate was established in 2000, and already it has
helped over 970 women prepare for employment; of those, DFS knows that at least 40% are now employed. The idea is simple: to provide low-income women entering the
workforce with appropriate donated and dry-cleaned business attire, first for their job interviews and
then, if they get the jobs, with clothes to start. The women are referred by the many social service
agencies in Greater Boston that provide job training. Volunteers coach the women on choice of clothes,
personal appearance and job-interview protocols. DFS has also instituted a follow-up program,
the Professional Women’s Group, of monthly networking and practical assistance seminars on job-related
topics -- e.g., health insurance, childcare, 401(k) plans, finances and social tools for the workplace. All
services are free of charge. Sometimes the simplest ideas are best; here anyone can help.
