DESCRIPTION:The next time someone tries to tell you that philanthropy is poorly managed and inefficient, you tell them about
HSP of Dorchester -- a management services organization created in 1998 to streamline two colleague institutions:
the Codman Square Health Center, which serves mainly African-Americans, and the Dorchester House Multi-Service
Center, the largest Vietnamese neighborhood in Massachusetts. Combining management services created economies of scale, eliminated
duplications, and enabled new services with savings and combined resources. Each institution has preserved
its cultural distinctness. In five years nearly $1 million has been saved by combining medical and behavioral
health leadership, mail, and technology support, and over $1.5 million from improved billing practices, lowering
denial rates from payers, increasing grant revenues, and coordinating care for high-risk, chronically ill patients.
New services are mammography, eye care, cardiology, and a dental clinic. For donors this is a highly innovative
and productive investment in urban health care delivery. Your support is needed, and will be well-used. (2003: HUMAN SERVICES: Health and Aging: General)
