Pakachoag Community Music School
When is a music school more than a music school? PCMS was founded by the Pakachoag Church of Auburn in 1982. It flourished and grew, and in 1989 was independently incorporated. By 1992 it had a $40,000 budget and 70 students; then leadership changed and it took-off; by 2002 its budget had quintupled (to $200,000), its students increased 6.5 times (to 450), and it moved beyond its suburban base to a broader community—minorities, low-income, and elders in urban (Worcester) and rural communities. It did this on its own, from its own values; it also has high musical standards, within the classical tradition. Believing that
all children are born with natural musical ability, which must be nourished by age 5, its early-childhood programs are outstanding. Are pipe organists diminishing nationwide? PCMS offers a National Guild of
Organists mind-blowing program—“Pedals, Pipes and Pizza”—for middle-schoolers, with the Worcester chapter of the American Guild of Organists and Pakachoag Church. To foster individual self-confidence and school
spirit, it offers over 25 school-wide public performance classes and recitals annually. If you believe in music education, here is a great program that needs your support to keep growing.
