Boston Classical Orchestra
BCO is one of the shining jewels in Boston’s music crown. Founded in 1977 by violinist Robert Brink, its musical directors have been Harry Ellis Dickson (1983-1999) and now the internationally distinguished Steven Lipsitt (1999-present). Its motto is “Great Music Up Close,” which it has offered since 1980 in Faneuil Hall, with its outstanding acoustics for chamber orchestra and the audience surrounding on three sides. BCO's musical focus is Classical: Baroque, Romantic, modern and even contemporary works. Four works were commissioned for its 25th anniversary celebration season this year. BCO’s vital signs are very strong: enthusiastic reception by audiences and critics; average audience 1,100 per two-performance concert; ticket sales providing 40% of the budget; 700 subscribers accounting for 43% of the average audience with another 20% from regular but nonsubscribing attendees. The challenge for BCO is the problematic future for performing arts organizations. Until recently this was a one part-time-staffed operation; those days are gone forever. BCO needs to market itself and fundraise more than ever, to meet rising costs. If you cherish BCO’s values and long, wonderful contribution to our quality of life, you can help ensure its future by supporting it now.
