DESCRIPTION:In 2000, animal-care professionals — veterinarians, trainers, pet-supply retailers, animal control officers, shelters and rescue groups — created the Massachusetts Animal Coalition (MAC) to promote collaboration for animals’ welfare. One of its core programs is to spay/neuter animals to prevent overpopulation; MAC provided over $4,000 for spay/neuter and vaccination programs and clinics. In 2002, the state legislature gave MAC oversight over monies raised through the sale of special license plates, with proceeds used for pet population control. In 2003, MAC opened a Spay Neuter Program in collaboration with Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, and over 400 animals have been spayed/neutered since the program's inception. By creating alliances with colleague institutions, MAC has improved communication among animal welfare personnel as well as shelter conditions. It has also helped to reunite owners with their lost pets, and collaborated with law enforcement, shelters and agencies. It takes considerable effort to put all this together. If you are interested, MAC needs your help. (2004: NATURE: Animal Services)
