The Central Square Theater
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN 2005This project is a collaboration between MIT, the City of Cambridge, and two award-winning Cambridge companies — the Nora Theatre Company and Underground Railway Theater (Catalogue ’98). Their aim is to build a 175-seat theatre and theatrical arts center that will be ready for occupancy in 2007. MIT has provided the space at below-market rates, and is coordinating the design and managing the construction. Because the Central Square area is culturally diverse and economically challenged, the project is committed to outreach by inviting neighborhood participation in all phases of development. An “Open Doors Initiative” engages local residents in opening their homes and businesses for fundraising events; community access to the facility and its programming will be integral to its operations; and both theatre companies are community-minded, so they too will continually reach out in various ways. The goal of this capital campaign is $2 million; it is now in its final stages, in which new patrons are needed and very much desired. A potential foundation patron will want evidence of broader support, so approximately $200,000 is needed at this point from new donors. Consider the pleasures of capital investment in a project of this quality and stature, and come aboard.
