DESCRIPTION:In 1991 a group of dancers looking for space came upon the old Odd Fellows Hall in Cambridge, a registered historic building last owned by a health club gone belly-up. Eureka! Why not take it over and create a common facility for many dancers to teach, rehearse and perform in? So they paid $800 for insurance, and moved in. Today The Dance Complex is a highly successful, volunteer-run, rental facility where costs are low and services to the dance community and the public are high — seven days a week, in all kinds of dance: salsa to ballet, street funk to tap. The Complex is home to companies like Prometheus Dance and Anna Myer and Dancers; it was an incubator for the Brazilian Cultural Center and the Boston Dance Company; its Shared Choreographers’ Concerts series provides a training ground and showcase for new producers, mentors and choreographers; it’s a catalyst for collaborations, even engaging Cantabrigians in a Read/Dance program with the libraries, and an annual DanceMonth project with the Mayor’s office. People love it, bestowing annual Best of Boston, Readers’ Choice and MIT Cambridge First Awards. The Dance Complex is a moving experience — and here is your chance to move with them.
