Hawthorne Youth and Community Center, Inc.
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN 2005HYCC has been called “the little organization that could,” and the story for donors here is that this is a modest but extremely successful, highly valued, grassroots organization that needs your help. Launched in a coal cellar in 1967, moved to a three-story building in 1970, and forced out by fire in 1973, HYCC forged collaborations with other organizations to keep itself alive for a decade. In 1984, it returned to the site of its original Roxbury home, where it still provides educational, cultural, vocational and recreational programs for youths and adults, to improve the quality of life in Roxbury’s Highland Park neighborhood. Some activities, like weekend outings and sports and dancing programs, can be conducted outside in a nearby park. But HYCC is straining at the seams; its growth, which the neighborhood needs, is stunted. Five years ago it began planning an expanded facility, and this past summer Phase I of the project was realized: a new kitchen, a handicapped-accessible bathroom, a library/computer/study room, and an office. Phase II, a studio/art room and urgently needed storage space, needs funding. We are not talking big bucks here — about $125,000 is still needed. Your contribution can help HYCC continue to do what it has so well proved it “could.”
