Snow Farm: The New England Craft Program CONTACT:5 Clary Road Williamsburg, MA 01096 413.268.3101 www.snowfarm.orgMary Colwell, Executive Director
DESCRIPTION:This is a special place, with a palpable mystique. Snow Farm was founded in 1983, and soon moved to 50 acres of historic farmland in Williamsburg, to teach fine crafts — woodworking, glassblowing, ceramics, drawing and others. Gradually over the years it earned a local, regional, and even national reputation for excellence. Many of its students have pursued higher education at arts institutions such as the Rhode Island School of Design, Carnegie-Mellon, and the Massachusetts College of Art, and have become professional artists and artisans. Today its program is almost year-round, with over 1,000 students (some on scholarships), ages 14 to 92. Snow Farm’s structure reflects its values: small administrative staff, large faculty, investments in equipment and instruction rather than luxuries, students pitching in with kitchen and cleaning chores, generous community support, and a famous “Seconds Sale” every November of items donated by craftspeople from all over the country. Snow Farm has received state awards for excellence from the Legislature and the Cultural Council. Isn’t it wonderful that it exists? Here is your chance to give “Thanks.” (2005: CULTURE: Arts: Education)
