Martha Dolben, Executive Director

African Food and Peace Foundation

AFPF was founded in 1981 to support grassroots development in Africa. In 1987, they created the Uganda Rural Development & Training Program (URDT) to train local people, especially women, to assume leadership in transforming themselves, their households, and communities. “To achieve lasting development, people must become empowered in all areas of their lives, including education, health, economic self-reliance, human rights, and civic participation.” URDT’s 80-acre campus promotes progress throughout Uganda’s Kibaale District with: a girls’ boarding school, offering free leadership training in rural development to 240 students, who take their learnings home to upgrade their families’ lives; a business institute, graduating 35 students per year as small-business entrepreneurs; a radio station, broadcasting programs on rural development to two million listeners; a computer center (12 computers, three Internet-linked); a 7,000-book library; a demonstration organic farm; an Appropriate Technology Center teaching renewable energy for home management; and a Human Rights program that has trained 1,200 human rights advocates, and distributed information to 11,000 villagers. URDT has opened the first African Rural University for Women, granting bachelor’s degrees and promoting research in rural development. Dollars go a long way, so investments are significantly leveraged; furthermore, an African Food and Peace Foundation board member has offered to match contributions from Catalogue readers made in 2006 — make sure to reference Catalogue for Philanthropy on your checks or in the comments section of your e-donation.
