Build the Out-of-School Time Network

Every parent worries about this twilight-zone time, the hours between when school gets out and parents get home from work. The choices for where kids can go are often few, especially for families with limited means. Founded nearly 20 years ago, Build the Out-of-School Time Network (BOSTnet) was created to expand the access of Boston's children and youth to quality and affordable opportunities during “out-of-school time” (OST) hours. It provides training and technical assistance to over 250 OST providers through special initiatives, conferences and workshops, and free monthly Director's Roundtable meetings. These providers can in turn reach more kids and keep them safe during those crucial hours. In addition, BOSTnet's Facilities Initiative, a collaboration between BOSTnet and the Child Care Capital Investment Fund, has invested $3 million and provided planning and technical assistance to help 56 OST programs make capital improvements to create hundreds of new enrollment spaces and quality program environments. The Lead to Opportunities for Youth with Disabilities initiative has supported 42 OST programs in developing inclusion projects to ensure that youth of all abilities can participate. Through the Engaging Families Initiative, BOSTnet has worked with 9 licensed afterschool programs to lay a foundation for active parental involvement in student learning in grades 1-5. And after-school program providers have been trained to work with parents to help them navigate school bureaucracies. These outreach efforts have been especially important to families whose first language is not English, and who are not familiar with U.S. school systems. BOSTnet is a crucial resource to both parents and OST programs. Please help them continue their work.
